Home of the Swallow:
Home of the Swallow was established in response to the problem of
many women being forced, for various reasons, to relinquish their children.
Many of these women, with the right kind of help, would chose to raise their
children instead of giving them up for adoption. Normal intake to the
program will be women in the latter part of their pregnancy. On arrival at
the home, the stage of pregnancy and health of each women is evaluated to
determine the degree that they will be involved in various activities prior to
giving birth. During their time at the home the women are assisted in
maintaining a healthy and appropriately active life style. Parental
training is provided, with resources and opportunities made available for the
women to gain advice and knowledge in the care of their child. Training is
also provided to enhance their opportunities for later employment.
Counseling, spiritual and emotional support are also made available and are an
important part of the program as many of the women come from difficult
backgrounds.
The Green House:
For a child in foster care, the transition period from foster
family to adoptive family is crucial. When the adoptive family has
accommodation close to the foster home, it allows for increased exposure to the
current daily routine and life of the child, and minimizes the difficulty of
transport in a foreign country. The Green House is a fully equipped home
offered at a reasonable rate, and is large enough for a couple with children.
The Green House has everything necessary for the adoptive family to be
comfortable during the transition period, and is within walking distance to
banks, markets, and a western style supermarket.
Swallow's Nest:
This program was begun to provide training and work opportunities
to residents of the Home of the Swallow. The women living at the home work
part time to produce useful items for newborns and infants. This includes
blankets, wraps, carriers, hammocks and a range of other baby products.
All items are 100% cotton. The program is designed to help participants
learn useful skills, and give them a sense of responsibility and fulfillment as
they contribute some of what they earn to the household and the costs involved
in having them in the program. All profits from the business are applied to the
cost of operating the Home of the Swallow.
